Jack G. Mitchell

Jack Mitchell goes way back with Boyd, starting in 1962, when he answered an ad for “Salesman Who Can Sketch.” When Jack discovered what the company was about he went home and designed a church fixture, which he had never done before. Returning the next day, he presented his sketch to Jack Sweet; impressed, Mr. Sweet gave Jack Mitchell the job.

Over the years Jack began designing his own custom jobs and in 1978 became the Director of Design for Boyd. In addition to custom designs, he’s been responsible for a number of historical restorations including the Paramount Theater in Oakland, CA and the Iolani Palace in Honolulu, HI. In 1979 Jay Sweet and Jack Mitchell launched the first of several Boyd catalogs.

There are too many of Jack Mitchell’s catalog designs to list, with the exception of the Spectro, which has been a constant seller for over thirty years. His awards include a first place in the initial year of the Pacifica Awards, first place with PG&E, and several Roscoe commendations. Boyd Lighting and Jack Mitchell were honored by the Oakland Museum requesting the Glasgow Table Lamp for permanent display

.

After Jack’s retirement he turned to writing, and over fifteen years wrote nine novels; five of which have been published under the name of J. Griffith Mitchell as e-books, available through amazon.com and other major on-line booksellers.

Jack Mitchell passed away in January 2016, but his legacy lives on at Boyd in the Spectro LED.
