Michael Vanderbyl has gained international prominence in the design field as a practitioner, educator, critic and advocate. Since being established in San Francisco in 1973, his firm – Vanderbyl Design – has evolved into a multidisciplinary studio with expertise in identity, print and digital communications, showrooms, interiors, furniture and product design.
Michael is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and has served as President and on the board of the National AIGA; he also holds a position on the Design Advisory Board and the Architecture and Design Accessions Committee at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is the recipient of the Gold Medal award from The American Institute of Graphic Arts and presides as Dean of Design at the California College of the Arts.
Over the past two and a half decades, he has designed award-winning furniture and lighting collections for Baker Furniture, McGuire Furniture, HBF, Bernhardt Design, Teknion Furniture Systems, JANUS et Cie, Boyd Lighting and Bolier & Co.
